Europe-wide toll settlement: DKV BOX EUROPE available from May

Convenient online ordering and toll registration / Plug and Play solution means no installation in workshop / over-the-air country configuration / manual adjustment of the number of axles / hybrid radio technology

The DKV BOX EUROPE, through which in future all toll charges in Europe will be able to be invoiced, can be ordered from May 2018. The ordering process takes place online and was developed in cooperation with DKV customers. The DKV BOX EUROPE is based on an EETS-compliant on-board unit manufactured by Siemens. The box is equipped with hybrid radio technology; i.e. it can record and invoice DSRC- and GNSS-based tolls. The DKV BOX EUROPE is due to enter its live testing phase in summer 2018, during which the first DKV customers will be using the on-board unit. DKV Euro Service plans to issue the first fully ready-for-use boxes to customers in September.

Convenient online registration and ordering

"Our objective is to successively replace all the on-board units presently installed in vehicles by the fourth quarter of 2018, because, in the medium term, users of the DKV BOX EUROPE will require only one on-board unit for the whole of Europe," says Jürgen Steinmeyer, Director of Toll at DKV Euro Service. "The DKV BOX EUROPE will not require replacement in order to be able to invoice additional country tolls." DKV customers can register online for further tolls, which can be switched on using an over-the-air configuration system. This can take place wherever the vehicle happens to be in Europe.

Switching on toll countries without exchanging your box

The first toll to be recorded and invoiced using the DKV BOX EUROPE is expected to be the toll in Belgium, which is scheduled for the last quarter of the year. The German toll is expected to follow, probably at the start of 2019. Spring 2019 will see the addition of the DSRC countries (Austria, France, Spain, Portugal). Shortly after that, Italy is due to be switched on. The bridge tolls for the Öresund and Storebaelt Bridges in Scandinavia will soon be able to be invoiced by the DKV BOX EUROPE.

"It may be that these and other tolls could be added to the system even earlier," says Jürgen Steinmeyer. "However, our first priority is to ensure security of supply to our customers, which means we much prefer to issue scheduled dates that we consider realistic. At the moment, countries such as Poland, Slovenia and Hungary are still drawing up their EETS regulations and therefore these countries cannot be covered by an EETS box yet. We are in contact with them and will shortly be discussing certification."
